Formal Structure & Classic Stone in Abingdon
The desire for this Abingdon garden was to create a sense of elegant formality and clear, defined structure. The client envisioned a sophisticated and timeless patio space that would serve as a perfect platform for entertaining, framed by strong, architectural planting that would provide green interest throughout the year.
The finished garden is a masterful exercise in formal design. The clean lines of the oak sleeper beds provide a perfect frame for the classic beauty of the Indian sandstone, while the sculpted Taxus balls add a touch of timeless elegance. It is now a well-defined, sophisticated, and serene space that feels both grand and inviting, perfectly fulfilling the client's vision for a structured garden sanctuary.
Our Solution
To create the classic foundation for the space, we laid a beautiful and generously sized Indian sandstone patio. This enduring material was chosen for its warm, natural tones and subtly varied texture, providing a timeless and high-quality surface for outdoor living.
To introduce a bold, structural element and frame the patio, we constructed raised beds from solid oak sleepers. These provide a clean, strong line and a rustic contrast to the smooth stone.
For the planting, we took a formal approach. We curated a simple, elegant scheme using clipped Taxus ball plants. These evergreen spheres provide a sophisticated, architectural quality and year-round structure that perfectly complements the classic style of the hardscaping.
