A Harmony of Stone and Wood in Abingdon
The goal for this Abingdon garden was to create a highly versatile outdoor space with distinct areas for dining and relaxation. The client wanted a design that felt both cohesive and varied, using natural, high-quality materials to provide different textures and atmospheres. A key requirement was to enclose the garden for privacy without sacrificing a sense of style.
The finished project is a masterful blend of textures and tones. The warm, earthy character of the Indian sandstone patio transitions beautifully to the smooth, rich surface of the Balau hardwood deck. The garden is now a highly functional and inviting oasis, offering distinct zones for any occasion, all enclosed within a smart and private boundary. It is a perfect example of how combining high-quality materials can create a space that is both practical and full of character.
Our Solution
We designed a multi-zone layout, anchored by two beautiful, contrasting surfaces. For the main dining area, we laid a patterned patio using Stonemarket Indian sandstone slabs in a warm, brown buff colour. This classic stone was chosen for its natural character and durability, creating the perfect foundation for entertaining.
Adjacent to the patio, we constructed a raised deck to serve as a dedicated space for lounging. For this, we used exceptionally smooth and dense Balau hardwood decking. This premium material is renowned for its incredible longevity and rich colour, providing a touch of luxury and a comfortable, splinter-free surface.
To provide a clean, private boundary for the entire space, the garden was enclosed with new Arris fencing, a strong and traditional style that perfectly complements the quality of the hardscaping.
